In this addition of Design Dialogues, we spoke with David Caon of @caondesignoffice, A Sydney-based designer and creative director whose work unites precision with purpose. Informed by global experience and Australian roots, he explores holistic “design ecosystems” where every detail, from form to function, contributes to the whole. Using only a pen, here are his responses.

David Caon is a designer and creative director whose practice spans industrial design, interiors, and brand experience. Rooted in precision and purpose, his work blends European experimentalism with Australian pragmatism creating refined, functional systems that balance logic and elegance. Based in Sydney, Caon’s approach is holistic, treating every element of the design process as part of a wider ecosystem.

His early career took shape abroad, working with George Sowden in Milan and Jerszy Seymour in Berlin, before collaborating in Paris with Marc Newson on projects for LVMH, Magis, Nike, and Qantas. Returning to Australia in 2009, Caon founded his eponymous studio and began a long-standing partnership with Qantas designing aircraft interiors, lounges, tableware, and most recently, the ultra-long-range Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. Today, Caon Design Office works across product design, interior architecture, and creative direction. Alongside partner Henry Wilson, David also leads the furniture brand Laker.
